Changes to the household for benefit claims
If there is a change to the number of people you live with and you are claiming Housing Benefit, joint Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support, we may need proof.
Adult joining the household as a partner
Proof is not needed if you get one of the following welfare benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Income Support (IS)
- Jobseeker's Allowance - JSA (IB)
- Employment & Support Allowance ESA (IR)
- Pension Credits
If you do not get one of the welfare benefits listed, we need:
- if not working: proof of current income
- if working: proof of all income and payslips covering the last 2 months and any other income
Adult joining the household as a non-dependant
The adult must either be:
- over the age of 18
- aged 16 years and over and not in full-time education
We will need:
- if not working and not claiming state benefits: a statement of day-to-day living expenses
- if working: proof of all income and payslips covering the last 2 months and any other income
Child or young person joining the household
If a child or young person who is aged 19 years or under, in non-advanced education, joins the household, we will need:
- birth certificate for new baby
- Child Benefit or proof to show the main address of the child
- if 16 years and over: proof of education or relevant training (for example, A-Levels or sixth form)
- if 3 children or more: Child Tax Credit statement
Child or young person leaving full-time, non-advanced education
If a child or young person is leaving full-time, non-advanced education, we will need:
- proof of Child Benefit terminating
- information on what they are doing now, for example, moving into higher education, working or claiming benefits
Household member leaving household
If you are not working, we will need proof of current income or how you are supporting yourself.
