As part of our Respect the Water – Drowning Prevention Plan and in partnership with Places Leisure, our leisure contractor, we are offering a free lifeguard course for young people aged 16 and over during the summer holidays. There is a maximum of 12 spaces for the course.
- Date: Thursday 3 – Tuesday 8 August
- Time: 9am - 5pm every day
- Location: Xcel Leisure Complex, Waterside Drive, Walton on Thames KT12 2JG
The course will teach you the skills and knowledge required to become a qualified lifeguard. You will learn how to prevent, recognise and respond to emergencies, as well as how to perform first aid and CPR.

You will also need to pass the Lifeguard Course Prerequisites below, to be able to participate in the course.
Lifeguard Course Prerequisites
You must be 16 years old at the time of taking the NPLQ final assessment, and be able to:
- Jump/dive into deep water
- Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
- Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water
- Tread water for 30 seconds
- Surface dive to the floor of the pool
- Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits
How to apply/enrol
If interested, please complete the NPLQ Enrolment Form (DOCX,905.16 KB) and send it to Joe Rolfe at joerolfe@pfpleisure.org, with ‘Free Lifeguarding Course’ written in the subject line. This should be sent by 1 August at the very latest.
If you are accepted onto the course, you will need to bring swim wear, spare tops and towels with you every day. You will also need to attend all sessions and pass a final exam to receive your qualification.
