How I joined the Elmbridge wellbeing cycle ride along the Thames to Richmond by Faye Ballard, Sport and Health Development Officer at Elmbridge Borough Council.
As the crisp winter air settles over Elmbridge, there’s a unique charm to be found along the banks of the Thames River. The borough’s iconic waterway takes on a serene beauty during the colder months, offering a perfect backdrop for a wellbeing cycle ride.
Picture this: a chilly morning, I pull into the car park, take my bike from the rack, don my extra winter hat/gloves and slightly clumsily join a group of cyclists who meet me with smiles and cheery voices. Any doubts disappear….It’s a day for embracing the invigorating spirit of winter, and what better way to do so than on two wheels with this friendly group to encourage me.
Joining a wellbeing cycle ride along the Thames during winter is not only an opportunity to stay active but also a chance to connect with nature and fellow enthusiasts. The rhythmic sound of pedals turning, the refreshing breeze off the water, and the picturesque scenery create a unique and memorable experience.
This route begins on the south side in the Sadler’s ride car park next to Hurst park. Here you already get a glimpse of the river. Cyclists gather, bundled up in layers to brave the winter chill. As the group sets off, they catch up on their week’s happenings. We pass Molesey Rowing club and cycle over the bridge to pass the iconic Hampton Court Palace and its majestic gardens.
The gentle pace of the ride allows participants to savour the sights and sounds of the river in a way that’s often missed during a shorter walk/stretch of the river. Riders are treated to a blend of architectural marvels and natural beauty. Today we navigate around some of the paths that have been flooded due to the recent weather but this experienced group know a number of alternate diversions.
The halfway point of the ride brings the group to a cosy riverside café, where cyclists can take a break, warm up with a hot drink, and share stories. The camaraderie among participants fosters a sense of community, turning the ride into more than just a physical activity—it becomes a shared journey of wellbeing.
The return journey finds us pass from the Thames tow path through some residential back roads and into Bushy park. The park’s vast open spaces take on a different charm as some unexpected sun rays penetrate the clouds and illuminate the autumnal hues of the landscape. The occasional rustle of wildlife in the bushes and glimpses of deer adds a touch of mystery and excitement to the ride.
We return to the river, to the south side and back to our meeting spot where the group makes arrangements for their next ride and it’s time for me to say farewell.
Joining a wellbeing cycle ride on a winter’s day combines physical activity, appreciation for nature, and the joy of shared moments, creating lasting memories and uplifting mood. So, bundle up, hop on your bike, and discover the beauty of the Thames in a whole new light.
