We have recently introduced a new free airTEXT service tailored to send air pollution alerts and health advice to residents and visitors who may be more vulnerable to the effects of air pollution.
Developed in partnership with six Surrey local authorities and Cambridge Environmental Research Consultants (CERC), the airTEXT service is designed to provide advanced notice when air pollution levels are expected to exceed the usual standards, up to three days in advance. This service tracks local nitrogen dioxide, ozone and fine particulates in the air, and includes information on air quality, pollen count, UV levels, and air temperature.
Residents can sign up to receive alerts through text, email, or voicemail. They can also choose specific areas for which they wish to receive alerts, depending on where they live or work. The new service replaces the airAlert service, which was recently discontinued.
Air pollution levels tend to increase on hot, sunny days during summer but risks also exist on cold, still days in winter. These elevated levels often persist for a couple of days, leading to what is described as a pollution episode.
Councillor Caroline James, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Environmental Health, said, “I encourage residents who have concerns about air pollution or who are more vulnerable to changes in air quality due to health conditions to sign up to the AirTEXT service. It is simple and easy to use and will help them make informed decisions to reduce their exposure and protect their health and wellbeing”.
