Elmbridge Borough Council is calling on residents to become hosts for Ukrainian families and receive a £600 per month “Thank You” payment. The war in Ukraine is ongoing, and many families still need accommodation. Since the scheme began, over 300 households in Elmbridge have stepped forward, hosting and supporting nearly 600 displaced Ukrainians in a unique and rewarding way.
Elmbridge residents provide not just accommodation, but also a warm welcome, a network of support, and help with settling into the UK. Sponsoring a guest can be a life-changing experience for both hosts and guests as one of our current hosts shares:
“Hosting Ukrainian families in the community here in Elmbridge has been a profound experience. Opening up a home and welcoming others into the family takes courage but is also hugely rewarding.”
However, the increases in the cost-of-living have made this effort challenging for both the displaced families and their hosts. Recognising this, we support each sponsor who accommodates a Ukrainian guest through the Homes for Ukraine scheme with a tax-free 'Thank You' payment of £600 a month.
To sponsor a guest, you must have a separate room, rooms, or property available. You can live in a rented property, but you must have permission from your landlord or housing provider. The minimum term for hosting is six months. Guests are entitled to benefits such as Universal Credit, housing benefits, or pension credits, you will not be expected to cover their food, transport, or living costs, although you are welcome to contribute if you wish.
If you are considering hosting or have previously hosted and would like to host again, please get in touch with us. We would be happy to discuss the requirements and support available. Email us at homesforukraine@elmbridge.gov.uk.
