Between 15 April and 26 April 2024, Elmbridge welcomed over 1,200 year 6 pupils from 23 different schools to the Xcel Sports Hub in Walton-on-Thames to participate in this year’s Junior Citizen.
Junior Citizen is a fun and engaging way for children to learn vital safety lessons. This year the sessions focussed on water safety, antisocial behaviour, online fraud, railway safety and drug and alcohol awareness. These were facilitated by 6 different agencies:
- PA Housing
- Barclays Bank
- British Transport Police
- South Western Railway / Network Rail
- Hope UK
- Places Leisure
A showcase day was held on 24 April where we welcomed the Mayor of Elmbridge, High Sherriff and the Deputy Lieutenant to watch and take part in the sessions, with very positive feedback received from teachers, pupils and the guests that attended on our showcase day.
Councillor Kirsty Hewens, Portfolio Holder for Enterprise, Parking and Local Economy praised the scheme: “The Junior Citizen programme is such a vital learning experience for our young people, especially as they transition to secondary education. Thank you to all the schools involved and our partner organisations for their commitment to the safety of our young residents.”
