We are urging residents to be water aware this spring summer season as the sun shines and our rivers attract more visitors, from open water swimmers to paddle-boarders, enjoying water sports to those enjoying a day out by the river with friends and family.
A number of young people have lost their lives in the Thames over the last few years, and we don’t want to see those tragedies repeated.
Many young people will currently be at home on GCSE or A Level leave. They might want to unwind by the water. We would like to remind them that it is still early spring and at this time of year, the water is freezing and dangerous with a strong current. It may look safe, but it's not!
We understand that it is not possible for parents and carers to always be aware of their children’s whereabouts with their friends, but we are asking you to remind them of the dangers of open water and to keep themselves and their friends safe.
We are working with partners to raise awareness of water safety amongst young people with our annual Junior Citizen event and much is done in schools to bring this important message to the forefront of their minds, especially when they are out by the river. However, it is crucial for them to remain alert, as it is for all of us.
We are privileged to live close to the Thames, a fantastic destination for all, especially in warm weather but we must keep water dangers in mind, for ourselves and our loved ones.
Across spring and summer, we will carry on issuing messages around water safety and share those of our partners on our channels, but when you are out and about by the riverside, we kindly ask you to take note of water safety instructions on the signs installed at hot spots along the river. Also spend a few minutes to familiarise yourself with how to use throw lines and safety equipment. This knowledge can make a huge difference in case of an incident.
For your own peace of mind and to keep your family and loved ones safe, get involved in the local community water safety events organised by the Fire and Rescue Services and the RNLI. They will be more than willing to advise you on how to stay safe and answer any questions.
Much enjoyment can be drawn from spending time by the river but let’s remember to be vigilant and enjoy the water responsibly this spring and summer.
