Did you know that unwanted items like handbags, shoes, belts, curtains, jeans, towels and more can be recycled into insulation and stuffing?
Today our waste and recycling partner Joint Waste Solutions (JWS) is launching a free textile collection scheme in Elmbridge.
Some items such as pillows and cuddly toys can’t be recycled. But others, such as clothes and rags and other clothing and home textiles can be.
All you need to do is pop clean items into a small clean bag, tied at the top, and place it next to your rubbish or recycling bin when you put it out for collection each week.
Items that are in good condition may be reused. If, however, they are in poor condition, they will be made into something like stuffing or loft insulation.
Instead of feeling guilty about throwing away unwanted textiles and clothing you can feel confident they can now get a new lease of life.
This new scheme is better for the planet and your local council, because it is more expensive to dispose of them as rubbish than to recycle or reuse them.
It is a brilliant way to support our goal for a more sustainable Elmbridge and our 2030 Vision for the borough.
JWS manages waste services for four Surrey councils and develops initiatives to improve recycling performance across the county.
