The much-loved Royston Pike Lecture Series is back at the Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre in Walton this autumn, with a captivating programme of talks exploring botany, crime fiction and local architectural history:

‘A Short History of Flowers’ - Wednesday 10 September 2025

The season opens with Advolly Richmond, renowned garden historian and familiar face from BBC’s Gardeners’ World. In her talk, ‘A Short History of Flowers’, inspired by her acclaimed book of the same name, Advolly will explore the rich stories behind our favourite garden flowers. From royal intrigue to botanical smuggling, she will reveal how flowers like bougainvillea and snowdrops have enchanted and influenced generations. Expect a journey through centuries of horticultural history, full of surprising tales and colourful characters.

‘A is for Arsenic: The Poisons of Agatha Christie’ - Wednesday 15 October 2025

Next, we dive into the deadly world of Agatha Christie with Dr Kathryn Harkup, chemist-turned-author and science expert. With ‘A is for Arsenic’, drawing from her book of the same name, Kathryn explores how Christie’s in-depth knowledge of poison and real-life cases shaped some of the most gripping plots in detective fiction. This talk promises a thrilling blend of science, literature, and murder mystery - perfect for fans of Christie and curious minds alike.

‘The Chatley Heath Semaphore Tower’ - Wednesday 12 November 2025

The final lecture of the autumn season focuses on a local landmark: The Chatley Heath Semaphore Tower. Built in 1822 as part of a communication chain from Whitehall to Portsmouth, the tower is a rare survivor of early telecommunication. Caroline Stanford, historian at the Landmark Trust, will share its remarkable story, from its role in post-Waterloo Britain to its recent restoration. A must for lovers of local history and architecture.
