Check if you need planning permission
The Planning Portal provides useful guidance on whether a project needs planning permission. You can use:
- Planning Portal’s interactive house for guidance on common projects in a detached or semi-detached house, terraced house, shop, flat or apartment
- Planning Portal’s common projects guides to find out about planning rules and whether permission is required for common building work projects in the home
Lawful development certificates
If you want us to confirm whether existing or proposed works need planning permission, you can apply for a lawful development certificate (Planning Portal).
Permitted development
For some forms of permitted development, you need to apply for prior approval.
Other permissions to consider
You may also need other consents as well as, or instead of, planning permission. This could include:
- changes to listed buildings may need 'listed building consent', see listed buildings
- demolition in conservation areas may need planning permission, see conservation areas
- developments that affect trees which are protected, see protected trees
- getting the kerb lowered outside your property may need permission, see dropped kerbs
For more information on permissions, see Planning Portal: full list of permissions.
